Overview

Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the most widely used supplement for mammalian and insect cell culture. It is low in antibodies and rich in growth factors, so it supports strong cell growth.

LSG supplies single-origin FBS with:

  • full traceability, audited through the ISIA Traceability Audit programme
  • sterility and virus testing on every batch
  • a Certificate of Analysis with every batch

How FBS supports cell culture

  • Hormonal factors stimulate cell growth and function.
  • Attachment and spreading factors help adherent cells attach to a surface before they proliferate.
  • Transport proteins carry minerals, lipids and vitamins.
  • Extra buffering capacity helps slow-growing cultures and low-density work such as cloning.

Collection and processing

FBS is collected with a closed-system method and processed rapidly. Low endotoxin and haemoglobin levels show how carefully that was done. All serum is collected and treated in line with current European regulations.

Foetal Bovine Serum in published research

Researchers have used LSG Foetal Bovine Serum in published studies across oncology, cell biology and drug discovery, including:

These publications report researchers’ use of LSG products in their methods. Some name LSG as Life Science Production. Inclusion does not imply endorsement by the authors, and results depend on each study’s conditions.

FAQs

Can I test a batch before I buy?

Yes. We can send a sample, typically 50 mL, so you can test a batch before choosing it. Testing is expected to take place within four weeks. Reservation agreements and volume-based discounts are available.

Which origins are available?

Each batch is single origin, stated on its Certificate of Analysis. Brazil, Paraguay, US and USDA stock is listed above. Australian, US, New Zealand and EU origins are available on request.

Can I get heat-inactivated or gamma-irradiated FBS?

Yes. Any FBS can be heat inactivated or gamma irradiated to order, at additional cost and with longer lead times.

How should FBS be stored and shipped?

Store at -20 °C or below and protect from light. FBS ships frozen on dry ice. Shelf life is 5 years from manufacture.

What documentation comes with each batch?

Every batch comes with a Certificate of Analysis showing its country of origin and test results. Full batch documentation is available, including Certificates of Origin and batch filtration records. Traceability records are audited through the ISIA Traceability Audit programme.

Is there a xeno-free alternative?

Yes. Human Platelet Lysate and Human AB Serum are human-derived alternatives to FBS.
