Overview

Chick Embryo Extract (CEE) is a cell culture supplement that provides essential growth factors. It is widely used to culture neural crest stem cells and muscle cells. LSG’s CEE is UK-origin and quality assured. It is available as a frozen liquid or lyophilised, so you can choose the format that suits your workflow.

Applications

  • Neural crest stem cells: CEE is a key supplement in neural crest stem cell medium for rat neural crest stem cells and other neural explants.
  • Muscle cell culture: CEE is used in myogenesis studies and to culture skeletal muscle cells.
  • Stem cell expansion: CEE has been used to expand many specific stem cell types.
  • Epigenetics research: CEE has been shown to facilitate DNA demethylation.

The product information sheet cites 26 published studies.

Production and quality

CEE is made from Bovans Goldline chick embryos. The eggs come from registered UK flocks free of clinical signs of notifiable disease. The extract is filtered to 0.2 µm and aseptically filled. Antibiotics are typically added: penicillin, streptomycin and amphotericin.

Every batch is tested negative for bacteria, yeast and fungi. Each batch is also tested by assaying the growth and differentiation of mouse muscle cells derived from the H-2Kᵇ-tsA58 transgenic mouse. Results are reported on the Certificate of Analysis.

FAQs

Should I choose frozen or lyophilised CEE?

Both formats are available. Frozen CEE is aseptically filled and stored at -20 °C or below. Lyophilised CEE can be stored at +4 °C, which suits labs without freezer space or that need easier shipping.

Is lyophilised CEE sterile?

The material is uncapped during lyophilisation, so sterility can’t be assured. Filter lyophilised product through a 0.2 µm filter after reconstitution. If required, add extra antibiotic/antimycotic after filtering.

Can I test a batch before I buy?

Yes. We can send a 10 mL sample, and we hold a reserved batch for four weeks while you evaluate it.

Can I get CEE without antibiotics?

Yes. CEE is available without antibiotics, as an ultrafiltrate, and in custom sizes.

How should CEE be stored and shipped?

Store frozen CEE at -20 °C or below; lyophilised CEE can be stored at +4 °C. Frozen product ships on dry ice and lyophilised product on blue ice. Shelf life is 5 years from manufacture.

How do I reconstitute lyophilised CEE?

Reconstitute to the original volume of 10 mL with sterile tissue culture grade water and agitate to mix. If a precipitate appears, keep agitating under cool conditions for several hours or overnight, or sonicate briefly in a sonicating water bath. Centrifuge at 3,000 g for 10 minutes and remove the pellet. Once reconstituted, store at 4 °C for immediate use, or aliquot into working volumes and freeze.

What should I do if I see a precipitate after thawing frozen CEE?

Protein precipitate may be seen on thawing. Centrifuge at 3,000 g for 10 minutes to remove it. To avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles, aliquot frozen CEE into working volumes before long-term storage.
